An exclusive radio exchange we obtained between the Japanese side and the Chinese Navy shows that the Japanese side identified itself as the "Japan Navy" during a joint China-Russia patrol.
The Chinese Navy immediately rejected the term, stressing that Japan may only maintain "Self-Defense Forces" under its Constitution.
