State Grid Shizuishan: Multi-measure to protect safety of anglers and the grid

"Sir, there are high-voltage transmission lines overhead. Fishing under power lines carries a serious risk of electric shock — please leave for your safety!"

On July 8, near the 220-kilovolt Yuetao Line A, maintenance staff from State Grid Shizuishan Power Supply Company approached an angler with this warning, then explained the hazards in person and shared essential electrical safety tips.

With outdoor fishing at its peak, the risk of accidents beneath power lines is climbing fast. To strengthen transmission line safety and avoid electric shock risks, the company is focusing on water bodies along the corridors of transmission lines. Using a multi-layered "smart inspection plus manual verification" approach, it has launched a targeted campaign to inspect and repair warning signs and protective fencing around fish ponds — building a solid dual barrier for public safety and grid reliability.

Fishing under power lines is a persistent threat to transmission security and a longstanding issue in line management. Committed to early detection and rapid response, the company has established a three-tier inspection system: drone and AI surveillance covering broad areas, local line watchers patrolling routes, and technical crews verifying specific sites — ensuring all water bodies and fish ponds across the company's jurisdiction are inspected thoroughly, with no blind spots.

The company runs routine micro-image patrols, cross-referencing archived hazard logs to remotely check key fishing spots and water crossings. The focus is on spotting missing, tilted, damaged, or faded warning signs. Meanwhile, the team carries out regular route inspections to detect and report damaged signage or unauthorized fishing in real time.

For issues flagged by smart systems or local watchers, O&M crews verify each case on site during daily patrols, building categorized checklists that ensure precise positioning, accurate assessment, and targeted fixes. Through a closed-loop and list-based process, faded or broken warning boards are replaced immediately and vegetation or debris obscuring signs is cleared — guaranteeing every warning marker is visible, legible, and effective. To date, the company has inspected and remediated 70 pond sections, installing or replacing 21 safety warning signs and bringing fishing-related hazards firmly under control.

Going forward, State Grid Shizuishan will continue refining its safety model and deepen electrical safety outreach in nearby villages and among angling communities — raising public awareness to safeguard both grid reliability and the personal safety of local residents.
