Chinese scientists share mushroom cultivation techniques to help improve incomes, build better lives

A small but ambitious project led by Chinese scientists is helping some of Kenya's impoverished women, particularly single mothers, to build new lives — one mushroom at a time.
Mom's Mushroom House, a collaboration between edible fungi researchers from Hunan province and Kenyan partners, is adapting Chinese cultivation techniques to local conditions, training women in Nairobi to grow and sell mushrooms from simple, low-cost structures.
The collaboration, which began last year, is led by the Institute of Hunan Edible Fungi, the China-Africa Economic and Trade Promotion Council in Hunan, and Albert Meadows Limited in Kenya. Last month, a team of Chinese female researchers traveled to Kenya to deliver on-site technical training to local women.
