UK-China Business & Innovation Hub accelerates bilateral collaboration

Just under two months after its official opening in Suzhou New District, East China's Jiangsu province, the UK-China Business & Innovation Hub has gathered significant momentum.

To date, the hub has engaged 40 entities and institutions, with 22 projects currently under active negotiation. Of the nine agreements signed at its inaugural ceremony, spanning financial services, the convention and exhibition economy, and cross-border investment, seven have already progressed to the registration and implementation phase, signaling strong early-stage execution.

Officially operational since May 28, the hub is designed as a strategic platform for investment promotion, innovation incubation, industrial partnership, and cultural exchange between China and the United Kingdom.

Leveraging Suzhou's and the Yangtze River Delta region's robust manufacturing base and dynamic innovation ecosystem, it facilitates collaboration through distinctive models such as "Suzhou Manufacturing + British Brands" and "British Technology + Suzhou Market."

The initiative of the hub follows the 14th China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO) meeting held in September 2025, underscoring both nations' shared commitment to broadening and deepening bilateral engagement.

In January 2026, during former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's official visit to China, Suzhou New District and the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Beijing to anchor the hub's operational framework.

Sebastian Wood, Chair of the CBBC, said, "The launch of the hub in Suzhou will further deepen trade and cultural exchanges between the UK and Jiangsu. We look forward to expanding collaboration in services trade and technological innovation, so that both sides can share in the new development opportunities ahead."

The hub is also set to expand its activities in the second half of 2026, with more than 30 bilateral economic and trade events in the pipeline. Planned initiatives include receiving UK business delegations from the private equity, green building materials, healthcare and dairy sectors, hosting events such as the London Life Science Week Roundtable and the Jiangsu-UK Entrepreneurs Business Summit and organizing a visit by a Jiangsu health industry delegation to the UK.

These initiatives are designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of exchange and cooperation, with the overarching goal of making China-UK collaboration more substantive, practical, and mutually beneficial.
