A photo released by officials shows first responders searching through collapsed houses on the outskirts of Huancayo, about 300 kilometers east of Lima, on Sunday. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Andean region late on Saturday, killing five people and injuring 21, authorities said on Sunday. Because the epicenter was at a shallow depth and many houses in the area are made of adobe or wood, a cane-and-mud blend called "quincha", some towns suffered significant damage, said Luis Vasquez, the director of the National Civil Defense Institute.
