Chinese representative at the Human Rights Council outlines position during urgent debate on Sudan
From Friday to Monday, the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council held an urgent debate on the human rights situation in and around El-Obeid, North Kordofan in the Sudan. Li Xiaomei, minister and deputy head of the Chinese Delegation attended the meeting and elaborated on China's position.
The humanitarian situation in and around El-Obeid has drawn widespread concern, said Li. The large-scale atrocities that occurred in El-Fasher must never be repeated, and the basic human rights of the Sudanese people, including their right to life, must be effectively guaranteed. The international community should work together to address the humanitarian crisis and alleviate the hardships faced by the people.
Li emphasized that discussions at the Human Rights Council should strictly adhere to its mandate and fully respect Sudan's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. The Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan was established without the consent of the Sudanese Government from the very beginning, he said, adding that the international community should not expand its mandate in disregard of Sudan's opposition. The Human Rights Council should listen to and respect the views of the concerned country, and work to facilitate a lasting solution through dialogue and negotiation.
