Wang Yi urges Iran, US to pursue peaceful resolution
China's top diplomat has called on Iran and the United States to jointly safeguard and implement their memorandum of understanding, saying the two sides should stay committed to peace, dialogue and consultation despite difficulties that may arise in the negotiation process.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks on Monday when meeting with Youssef Alaa El-Deen, secretary-general of the Egyptian National Security Council, in New Delhi.
The memorandum of understanding signed by Iran and the US, which commits the two sides to respecting each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, refraining from any military action and avoiding interference in each other's internal affairs, has sent a positive signal to the outside world, Wang noted.
Wang warned that the negotiation process is unlikely to be smooth and may still face disruptions or even setbacks. However, as the door to peace has already been opened, it should not be closed again, he said.
No matter what difficulties and challenges emerge, all parties should remain committed to peace and adhere to dialogue and consultation, Wang added.
Wang stressed that China has always believed regional hotspots and differences among relevant parties should be resolved through dialogue and negotiation, and opposed the use or threat of force.
China is ready to maintain communication with Egypt and continue encouraging peace talks through their respective channels in order to jointly contribute to regional peace and stability, he said.
El-Deen briefed Wang on the latest developments in the Middle East and the mediation efforts of a four-party mechanism involving Egypt. He also spoke highly of China's role in promoting a ceasefire and peace talks.
As 2026 marks 70 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Egypt, Wang said China is willing to use the anniversary as an opportunity to continue high-level exchanges, enhance mutual political trust, advance practical cooperation and strengthen multilateral coordination.
El-Deen said Egypt firmly abides by the one-China principle and resolutely opposes interference by other countries in China's internal affairs.
Egypt is ready to step up high-level exchanges around the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, deepen practical cooperation under such frameworks as the Belt and Road Initiative, the BRICS mechanism and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and push bilateral relations to achieve greater development, he added.
Both Wang and El-Deen are in New Delhi to attend the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security.
