US tops spending on nuclear arsenal: Report

Spending on nuclear weapons by the world's nine nuclear-armed states rose by almost one-fifth last year to $119 billion, a report by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons said on Tuesday. The 19 percent increase from 2024 produced the highest expenditure on nuclear weapons since the campaign group began tracking the annual nuclear arms expenditure in 2020. The United States spent $69.2 billion, more than all other nuclear states combined, and saw the largest increase, at 22 percent. Washington is increasing military spending in general as well as rebuilding its nuclear arsenal, ICAN says.

Protests erupt against Ebola quarantine site

Kenyan protesters demonstrated on Tuesday against an Ebola quarantine center being built for United States citizens in the central town of Nanyuki. The proposed 50-bed unit on an air force base has angered many Kenyans, who accuse the US of off-loading the risk of caring for those exposed to the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Kenya has not recorded any cases, and many oppose the idea of bringing potential carriers of the highly contagious disease into the country. "We are not happy with the idea of establishing this Ebola facility here," protester Bethwel Onyango, 24, told Reuters.

Girl arrested after 3 injured in stabbing

The UK police said on Tuesday they arrested a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Manchester after two students and a staff member were wounded in a school stabbing. The girl was arrested on suspicion of assault and was in custody for questioning, Greater Manchester Police said. Three people were injured — a 14-year-old schoolgirl, a 14-year-old schoolboy and a 27-year-old man who is a staff member. It is believed all of them bore stab wounds. "All were taken to hospital, however, injuries are thankfully not believed to be serious, and all are stable at this time," police said. The school decided to go into lockdown following the attack, the Manchester Evening News reported.
