In 2014, a devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Zhaotong, Yunnan province, severely damaging a local primary school and forcing children into makeshift shelters. Within just 48 hours, Jaguar Land Rover China committed 5 million yuan ($737,390) to reconstruct the campus. A year later, the JLR Hope School opened its doors — a state-of-the-art facility high in the mountains at an altitude of nearly 2,600 meters.

That initial emergency relief laid the groundwork for a much broader vision. Today, as JLR marks the 12th anniversary of its youth philanthropy initiatives on May 28, the scale of its commitment has grown significantly, anchored by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation — JLR China Children and Youth Dream Fund.

Launched in 2014 as the Chinese automotive sector's first youth-focused corporate social responsibility initiative, the fund has driven an investment of over 100 million yuan. Focused on education, social care, and UK-China cultural exchange, the fund has benefited more than 700,000 young people, cementing JLR's role as a catalyst for social mobility.

Rebuilding hope: evolution of a mountain school

The JLR Hope School remains the cornerstone of this philanthropic journey. Over the past 12 years, JLR has transformed a donation into a holistic, evolving ecosystem of support.

Uniting employees, dealers, car owners and partners, this collective effort has delivered essential winter provisions alongside comprehensive campus upgrades, ranging from modern teaching equipment and improved sanitary facilities to a new sports pitch. Beyond infrastructure, JLR's Dream Classroom program has brought nearly 40 volunteer teachers to the school since 2016.

This sustained dedication has yielded remarkable results. The student-teacher ratio has improved from 1:40 to 1:19, driving a dramatic improvement in academic performance: the school's ranking has leapt from the bottom into the top five of the district.

Crucially, more than 1,000 students have now graduated, with over 70 advancing to university.

This ethos of continuous innovation is embodied by the Dream Store. Launched in 2022, the initiative transforms students' artwork into creative merchandise, with proceeds reinvested into the school to create a sustainable philanthropic cycle.

During a visit to JLR China's headquarters in October 2025, the British Ambassador to China Peter Wilson praised the initiative. Describing JLR as "a huge bridge between the UK and China", he commended the company for building its societal influence "piece by piece".

JLR also actively broadens students' horizons through unique cultural exposure. Last autumn, the campus hosted a UK-China Cultural Exchange Festival, blending Yunnan traditions with British heritage. Previously, students traveled to Shanghai to attend the China International Import Expo, an eye-opening excursion designed to expand their worldview and inspire future ambitions.

Such localized success is informing JLR's global strategy. In February 2025, the company launched the JLR Foundation to support young people worldwide, echoing the compassion refined in the mountains of Yunnan.

Cultivating sustainable influence over time

Through a steadfast commitment to youth development, JLR has forged a model of sustainable social influence in China, championing long-term initiatives that deliver measurable and lasting benefits to local communities.

In the realm of health and social care, the Journey for Vision program has left an indelible mark. Spanning 11 provinces, the initiative has provided free eye screenings to more than 350,000 children and funded over 6,000 eye surgeries. Crucially, by donating advanced diagnostic equipment and training local medical practitioners, JLR has systematically raised the standard of grassroots ophthalmic care.

Simultaneously, the Jaguar Youth Football Development Initiative, delivered in partnership with Tottenham Hotspur, has brought British youth training systems to Chinese schools. Benefiting thousands of students and teachers across multiple cities, the program has sponsored over 200 outstanding young players to participate in cultural exchange trips to the UK, serving as a bridge strengthening China-UK sports and cultural ties.

As it enters this 12th year, JLR's focus remains firmly on the future. Cementing its long-term CSR strategy, the British carmaker has officially launched the next phase of the JLR China Children and Youth Dream Fund. Delivered in partnership with the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, this renewed alliance is backed by a 25 million yuan investment to support an even broader demographic of young people.

The new chapter was recently inaugurated at the historic Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling in Beijing. In the presence of Chen Hongqu, secretary-general of the CSCLF, and Tim Howard, CEO of JLR China, the new-phase cooperation agreement was signed by Liu Ying, deputy director of the Fund Department of the CSCLF, and Anthea Wang, executive vice-president of Public Relations and Corporate Affairs at JLR China.

"Our continuous 12-year social investment demonstrates JLR's enduring commitment to deepen our presence in the Chinese market," said Howard. "It is a testament to our confidence in driving our local development strategy and fulfilling our corporate social responsibility. We look forward to joining hands with more outstanding partners to create a brighter future for the next generation, whilst playing a more significant bridging role in mutually beneficial UK-China economic, trade and cultural exchanges."

With social responsibility at the core of its corporate culture, JLR remains committed to exploring innovative philanthropic models to expand its positive influence and engage a growing network of car owners, employees and partners. By continuing to invest in the potential of China's youth, JLR is forging a lasting legacy that bridges cultures, uplifts communities and drives sustainable development for generations to come.
