Transportation: Take a high-speed train from hubs like Lanzhou or Xi'an to Guazhou Railway Station (or the nearby Liuyuan South High-Speed Station). Alternatively, fly to Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, followed by a 1.5 — to 2-hour taxi or bus ride to Guazhou.

Best time to visit: May to October offers the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities and desert sightseeing. Spring and early autumn are particularly suitable for hiking and Gobi-crossing experiences.

What to see: Key cultural sites within Guazhou include the stunning Yulin Caves (the "sister caves" to Mogao) and the Suoyang City ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage site along the Silk Road featuring the adjacent Ayuwang (Ashoka) Temple. You will also see ancient beacon towers scattered across the Gobi. Most visitors combine this trip with a visit to nearby Dunhuang to see the Mogao Caves and Crescent Spring.

Local specialties: Guazhou literally translates to "Melon City", so do not miss its famously sweet honeydew melons. The region is also known for Provence tomatoes and locally raised lamb.

Tips: Desert temperatures can vary sharply between day and night, so layered clothing, sun protection and sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended. Strong winds and dry conditions make sunscreen, sunglasses and constant hydration essential for outdoor activities.
