China hopes Pakistan steps up mediation on Iran-US talks
Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China hopes Pakistan will maintain confidence and step up mediation efforts to help properly address issues related to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and restore regional peace at an early date.
Wang made the remarks on Tuesday during a phone conversation with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.
Dar briefed Wang on Pakistan's recent mediation efforts to facilitate contacts and talks between Iran and the United States, and thanked China for supporting Pakistan's efforts to promote dialogue.
He said Pakistan looks forward to strengthening coordination with China and working together to play a positive role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.
Wang reiterated China's principled position and expressed appreciation for Pakistan's role in facilitating US-Iran talks and extending the temporary ceasefire.
Properly addressing issues related to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and restoring regional peace at an early date is also the common aspiration of the international community, Wang said.
China will continue to support Pakistan's mediation efforts while making its own contributions toward that end, he added.
