What: Mt Gaoligong Ultra, a long-distance trail running event divided into several categories: GEP 15 km, TCZ 35 km, THT 55 km, RCE 120 km, and MGU 168 km.

When: March

Where: The Gaoligong Mountains of Tengchong, Yunnan province.

How: Register at: www.itra.run.

Fly from Kunming Changshui International Airport in Kunming to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport in Tengchong, Yunnan province, with a flight time of about 80 minutes.

Alternatively, take a four-hour train journey from Kunming to Baoshan. Once you exit the train station in Baoshan, buses are available to Tengchong, with a travel time of about two hours.

Other attractions: Away from the trail, other things to see in the area include Heshun Ancient Town, Rehai Hot Springs Scenic Area, National Volcanic and Geothermal Park, Beihai Wetland and the National Martyrs Cemetery.
