Migrants' deportation unlawful, rules judge

A US federal judge ruled on Wednesday that the US administration's policy of deporting undocumented migrants to countries that are not their own is unlawful. District Judge Brian Murphy put his ruling on so-called third-country deportations on hold for 15 days to allow the government to file an appeal. The judge noted that Congress has made it US policy not to deport people to countries where their lives would be in danger or they could be subjected to torture. Under the Department of Homeland Security policy, however, "immigration officers need not give notice or any opportunity to object before removing someone to an unfamiliar and potentially dangerous country", Murphy said.

Carney starts visits to boost partnerships

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was expected to fly to Asia on Thursday on a three-country tour with the first stop in India, where he hopes to double the trade. Carney's India visit marks the latest effort to reset bilateral ties that had effectively collapsed after Ottawa accused New Delhi of orchestrating a deadly campaign against Sikh activists on Canadian territory. India has denied those allegations. For Carney, the trip also includes stops in Australia and Japan.

At least 25 killed in 2 separate attacks

At least 25 people were killed in two separate extremist attacks in northeastern Nigeria's Adamawa state, local sources told Agence France-Presse on Thursday. "Gunmen, believed to be Boko Haram on many motorcycles ... attacked the market. They opened fire on people and killed 21," a Madagali local government official told AFP about Tuesday evening's attack, on condition of anonymity. Four others, including three troops, were killed in the town of Hong.
