China pioneers Digital South project in interests of tech equality
China will support the building of a "Digital South" project under the framework of the Global Development Initiative over the next five years to ensure that scientific and technological advances benefit developing countries more extensively, a representative for the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) said on Tuesday.
At a press briefing, CIDCA spokesman Li Ming said China will work with partner countries to identify priority areas and directions of cooperation, as well as further strengthening digital infrastructure capacity.
According to Li, China will work with partner countries to leverage digital technologies to empower sectors such as pharmaceutical research and development, agricultural productivity, inclusive education and disaster early warning systems. He added that, over the next five years, China will host 200 training programs on the digital economy and artificial intelligence for Global South countries.
Li said the CIDCA is inviting various Chinese and international partners to actively participate in building the "Digital South" initiative, jointly design digital empowerment projects under the GDI, create more digital development brands and help bridge the digital divide between the Global North and South.
China is a natural member of the Global South and shares deep emotional bonds and extensive common interests with other developing countries, he said, adding that relations remain solid.
China has always focused on the shared needs of Global South countries, advanced reform of the global governance system and firmly safeguarded development rights and the interests of the Global South, he said.
China is ready to increase resource input into international development cooperation, work to narrow the North-South gap and support other developing countries in accelerating their development, the spokesman said.
China would also like to deepen development cooperation with all parties to ensure that the outcomes of Chinese modernization will better benefit people around the world, Li said.
According to Li, China will continue to explore innovative cooperation approaches, mobilize resources from all parties, and support the Global South in strengthening solidarity and self-reliance.
In the time ahead, China will expand foreign aid efforts in working for the common good, he added.
