European route E60 is a major corridor linking Europe and China and is one of Georgia's most important transport arteries.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said the road's opening represents a concrete step toward the country's modernization.
The new route ends an era in which the old highway ran through towns, mixing pedestrians and vehicles and causing severe congestion. Built as a bypass, the route avoids level railway crossings and restores safety and efficiency for locals.
