China connects farthest 800 MW offshore wind farm to grid

China's farthest offshore wind power project achieved full-capacity grid connection on Monday, signifying a major breakthrough in the country's push to expand offshore wind power into deep and distant sea areas.

The 800-megawatt project, located in Yancheng, East China's Jiangsu province, consists of four sites, with the farthest point located 85.5 kilometers from the shore, making it the farthest offshore wind power project in the country to date, according to its operator, China Three Gorges.

With a total of 98 wind turbines installed, supported by three offshore booster stations and one offshore rescue platform, the project is expected to generate an average annual electricity output of over 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours, sufficient to meet the daily electricity needs of 1.4 million households, it said.

It will also save approximately 860,000 metric tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 2.37 million tons.
