China deploys aid to Sri Lanka in wake of cyclone
China has stepped in to support disaster relief efforts in Sri Lanka after severe floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah caused substantial casualties and extensive property damage.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the Red Cross Society of China has disbursed $100,000 in emergency cash aid to its Sri Lankan counterpart while emergency assistance from the Chinese government is also en route.
The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Overseas Chinese Association in Sri Lanka have also launched donation initiatives, with Sri Lankan Rupees 10 million ($32,501) collected so far for the affected regions.
"We are confident that, under the firm leadership of (Sri Lankan) President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and with the collective support of the international community, the valiant Sri Lankan people will undoubtedly overcome the disaster, stand united in solidarity and rebuild their homes in the near future," read a Chinese embassy statement which was released on Monday.
The embassy added on social media platform X: "China's heartfelt condolences to the victims and sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and flood-stricken people.
"China's assistance and support to Sri Lanka on the way. China's solidarity and support for the Government and the people of Sri Lanka."
