Born at the Mogao Grottoes, Chang Jiahuang has shared a special relationship with the site for his entire life. His father Chang Shuhong (1904-94), founding director of the Dunhuang Academy, dedicated his life to protecting the grottoes and promoting Dunhuang arts. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Chang has carried on the family's cultural mission, leading to his nickname "Son of Dunhuang". He believes that the way to advance Dunhuang culture is not to simply copy the past, but to create new art for the next 1,000 years.
