5 tourists killed in snowstorm

Five foreign tourists were killed after a powerful snowstorm struck Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, southern Chile, the local government said on Tuesday. Jose Antonio Ruiz, a local official, said the dead were two Mexicans, two Germans and a British woman, all part of a tour group. Ruiz said the tourists got lost while strolling in the Los Perros district, located about 11 kilometers from the park entrance. Ruiz confirmed that the bodies would be evacuated by helicopter.

Tokyo set to restart nuclear plant: Report

Japan is set to give the green light this week to restart the world's biggest nuclear plant, local media reported on Wednesday. The resource-poor country pulled the plug on nuclear power after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, but it wants to revive atomic energy and reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant is expected to get approval this week, according to Kyodo News and the Nikkei Business Daily. Japan still faces the daunting task of decommissioning the Fukushima plant, which is expected to take decades.

TURKIYE

Zelensky set for talks in new peace drive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to hold talks in Turkiye on Wednesday and meet US Army officials in Kyiv on Thursday in a new drive to revive peace negotiations with Russia. No face-to-face talks have taken place between Kyiv and Moscow since a meeting in Istanbul in July and Russian forces have pressed on with Moscow's nearly four-year-old fighting in Ukraine, killing 19 people in strikes overnight. The Kremlin said Russian representatives would not be involved in the talks.
