EU mulls brake clause on 2040 climate goal
The European Union is considering a "brake clause" that could weaken its 2040 climate target if forests absorb less CO2 than expected, according to a draft compromise seen by Reuters. EU member states are seeking to finalize the target at a meeting on Tuesday, ahead of Thursday's COP30 climate summit. The European Commission has proposed cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, but some countries fear the costs to struggling industries. The draft added a new clause that said if land and forest carbon sinks fall short, the EU may propose "an adjustment of the 2040 intermediate target corresponding to and within the limits of the possible shortfalls".

Hamas committed to Gaza truce: Erdogan
Hamas is "determined" to stick to the Gaza truce, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, adding it was crucial that Muslim nations play a leading role in the Palestinian territory's reconstruction. "It seems that Hamas is quite determined to adhere to the agreement," Erdogan told delegates from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation gathered in Istanbul for an annual summit. "At this point, we need to deliver more humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and then begin reconstruction efforts," he said. "The Israeli government is doing everything in its power to prevent this."
