Japan made history on Tuesday as the parliament elected Sanae Takaichi, president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as the country's 104th and first female prime minister.

Takaichi garnered 237 votes against Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan leader Yoshihiko Noda's 149 in the first round of election, preventing a runoff in the Lower House.
