Making two atomic nuclei fuse in a safe, controlled way is one of today's toughest yet most promising scientific pursuits. The International Atomic Energy Agency's 30th Fusion Energy Conference, as well as Second Ministerial Meeting of the IAEA World Fusion Energy Group 2025, both recently kicked off in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Nearly 2,000 experts from 61 countries and organizations have gathered in Chengdu to discuss the future of fusion. China plays a key role in ITER, the world's largest international scientific collaboration since the ISS. As ITER Director General Pietro Barabaschi said, "Ignition, the first time with wood, this time we try to do it at the nuclear level with this isotope of hydrogen."
