Prison riot leaves 14 dead, 14 wounded
A prison riot caused by gang fighting in southern Ecuador on Monday left 14 people dead and another 14 wounded, according to a local police chief. Prisoners in the port town of Machala, south of Guayaquil, faced off with authorities, killing a guard and kidnapping officers, police chief William Calle told TV network Ecuavisa. "From the inside, they were shooting, throwing bombs, grenades," Calle said. Some prisoners escaped, and 13 have been recaptured so far, he added.

Washington's sanctions on judge's wife decried
Brazil's government said on Monday that it received the announcement of sanctions imposed by the United States on the wife of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes with "deep indignation", and described the move as an attack on the country's sovereignty. "Brazil will not bend to yet another aggression," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Timor-Leste to join ASEAN in October
Timor-Leste is set to become the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in October, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Tuesday during a visit to the country. The accession will be formalized at a gathering of world leaders in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar said, as Malaysia currently chairs the regional bloc. "The accession of Timor-Leste to ASEAN will be of immense benefit to us all," he said after meeting Timor-Leste's President Jose Ramos-Horta.
