Tongdao is the core settlement area of the Dong ethnic group. More than 300 villages dot the county. Hailed as a living museum of Dong culture, the group's architecture, songs, dances, costumes and customs are preserved here. Representative intangible cultural treasures continue to flourish — Dong brocade, the Dawuliang Song Festival and dances to the sound of the lusheng (a traditional reed instrument).

Along the Pingtan River, Dong villages such as Huangdu and Youtou form part of the so-called hundred-mile gallery of Dong culture and attract a steady stream of tourists.
