Shanghai tops night economy index with over 4m nighttime trips

Shanghai ranked first nationwide in the comprehensive night economy index by recording an average of 4.03 million nighttime trips in 2024, according to a latest report.
Published by Shanghai Yicai Media Group on Saturday, the report states that Shanghai’s nighttime lighting covered 75 percent of the city’s area, while over 264,900 late-night film screenings were held throughout the year. The active coverage area of nighttime public transportation amounted to 1,975 square kilometers.
Since June, Shanghai’s nighttime consumption has totaled 88 billion yuan ($12.27 billion), representing a year-on-year growth of 3.3 percent, data from Fudan University’s Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai) indicated.
To better support the development of the city’s nighttime landmarks, 10 new measures have been introduced, including four newly added policies and six upgraded initiatives, said the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.
These measures include enhancing food safety supervision at markets, supporting the organization of themed and specialty bazaars, enriching nighttime street performances, improving the quality of landscape lighting, and optimizing parking services during evening hours.
