"Classmates, look, this is the burnt overvoltage and undervoltage delay protector. Once this situation occurs, it is likely to burn the surrounding wires and even cause a fire, so be sure to pay attention."

In mid-July, at a rural primary school in Yichuan county, Henan province, volunteer teachers from the State Grid Luoyang Power Supply Company were teaching students about electricity safety.

It is common for rural workers in Yichuan county to migrate elsewhere in China for work and, during the summer, left behind children inevitably face some difficulties in terms of care and academic counseling. To this end, local universities and departments such as electricity and public security have jointly launched rural volunteer teaching activities, focusing on the problem of "difficult care" for left behind children. Through the collaboration of "home, school and community", a summer safety protection and growth support system has been constructed.

Pay attention to mental health and take students to see the outside world

In addition to safety education, this year's volunteer teaching curriculum also includes content on mental health guidance. The curriculum is designed to balance practicality and fun, using forms such as hand-copied newspapers and textbook dramas to help children correctly understand emotions.

Liu Yao, a college student from Ocean University of China, is the leader of the "Zhiyuan Team" for this volunteer teaching program. She is responsible for teaching students mental health courses on topics such as "Initial Understanding of Mental Health", "Emotional Recognition and Expression", and "Gamification of Stress Management". Through the course content, she hopes to teach students how to psychologically guide themselves and respond to campus bullying by saying "no".

"I think the volunteer teaching activity is particularly meaningful. Through our perspective, we can show children the excitement outside the classroom, nurture their dreams through vivid practice, and hope that our actions can plant a healthy seed of growth in students' psychology," said Liu.

The volunteer teaching activities have brought new knowledge and joy to children's summer times.

"We learned knowledge that was not included in the textbook in their class. Every time we attended their class, our laughter and joy never stopped. I think I will definitely miss them," said Du Zihan, a fifth grade student at Dugou Elementary School in Yaling town, Yichuan county.

In addition to the difficulty of taking care of children during summer vacations, their free time can also lack fun, and volunteer teaching activities effectively make up for this deficiency.

"We adhere to the principle of 'staying under control during holidays' and gather left behind children, allowing them to experience the warmth of society while also gaining knowledge, friendship and the joy of growth, "said Zhao Junqing, vice-principal of Doucun Central Primary School in Baisha town, Yichuan county.

Ensure personal safety and build a strong safety net

"Every summer vacation, we are very worried. We have to go to work and our children are left unattended at home, so safety is a major issue," said Liu Qiang, a villager from Qiling village.

Various safety issues such as drowning prevention, safe use of electricity and legal education are particularly prominent during the summer. How to solve parents' worries and promote children's comprehensive development through teaching support activities has become a major challenge facing the local government.

"We not only use PPT presentations, scientific experiments, and other forms to educate children on the dangers of electric shock, safe use of electricity and preventive measures, and first aid for electric shock, but also enhance children's awareness of safe use of electricity through reproducing safety knowledge scenarios, small experiments and other methods, ensuring the electrical safety of the campus," said Li Ke, secretary of the Youth League Committee of the State Grid Henan Electric Power Yichuan Company.

Through classroom content, children have also benefited greatly.

"I have learned about residual current devices, and I will also remind my parents to use electricity safely when I go home," said Li Xinyi, a student at Qiling Elementary School in Yaling town, Yichuan county.

At the same time, in response to the high incidence of accidental injuries among underage students during the summer vacation, the local public security department has implemented summer front-end prevention measures, organized safety hazard investigations, and carried out "Summer Rule of Law in Campus" propaganda activities to enhance the safety awareness and self-protection ability of minors.

"Through teaching support activities, we promote the sinking of high-quality resources into rural campuses, integrating multiple forces such as home, school and society to empower the growth of young people, helping children learn about mental health knowledge and protect their own safety," said Liu Guoqiang, deputy director of the Education and Sports Bureau of Yichuan county.

"We will continue to invite more universities and social forces to participate and inject new momentum into rural education."
