The musical tells the story of the famous lawyer Fong Tong-geng. At the height of his career, Fong suffers a blow in his career, and his reputation and wealth vanishes overnight. The Impossible Trial is set in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). However, composer and musical director Leon Ko's music score sounds more aligned to the idiom of Western musicals rather than Chinese opera.

The musical's director Fong Chun-kit specifically mentioned the design of the revolving stage: "Stage design is not just about visual presentation; it is also part of the storytelling. The key lies in precisely calculating the rhythm of the turntable within limited time and space — subtly foreshadowing key plot points, using visuals to carry emotion, and using movement to tell the story."
