Xi extends condolences on the passing of former Uruguayan leader

President Xi Jinping on Friday extended condolences to Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi over the death of former Uruguayan president Jose Mujica.

In his message, Xi expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Chinese government and people, and extended sincere sympathies to Mujica's family and the people of Uruguay.

Xi described Mujica as a famous leader in Uruguay who dedicated his life to the well-being of the Uruguayan people, saying he is deeply loved by the Uruguayan people and enjoys high prestige in the international community.

The late leader had long been committed to promoting the development of China-Uruguay relations and made positive contributions to friendship between the two countries, Xi said, adding that his passing has caused the Chinese people to lose an old friend and a good friend.

Noting that he attaches great importance to the development of China-Uruguay relations, Xi expressed his willingness to work together with Orsi to continue to promote the continuous advancement of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Xi's article lays out plans for improved work conduct

An article by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on implementing the guiding principles of the central Party leadership's eight-point decision on improving work conduct was published on Friday.

The article by Xi, who is also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, was published in this year's 10th issue of Qiushi Journal, the flagship magazine of the CPC Central Committee.

The article is based on excerpts of Xi's major relevant statements made between December 2012 and March 2025.

Noting that good work conduct is critical to the survival of a governing party, the article stressed a strict approach in implementing the eight-point rules, and requires leading officials at all levels to take the lead in setting a good example.

It further points out that efforts to strengthen Party and government conduct must closely align with the key requirement of maintaining a close bond with the people, guard against any slackness in the process and remain vigilant against new covert forms of misconduct, so as to resolutely prevent any resurgence of relevant problems.

The implementation of the eight-point rules is an important endeavor for the Party to earn public trust in the new era, the article said, requiring consistent and strident efforts in this regard.

Vice-president cites role of US business community

Vice-President Han Zheng on Friday expressed hope that the business community of the United States will play a greater role in promoting bilateral relations and the common interests of both countries.

Han made the remark when meeting with Invesco Chairman Richard Wagoner in Beijing, saying that China and the US share extensive common interests and have ample room for cooperation.

The economic and trade talks between the two countries have recently made substantial progress, Han said, adding that the two countries should properly resolve differences and frictions in economic and trade cooperation through good-faith dialogue.

He said China will actively draw on the development experience of the international capital market and accelerate the reform of its own capital market that suits China's national conditions.

As a long-term participant in China's capital market, Invesco is welcome to continue to strengthen cooperation with China, Han added.

Hailing China's tremendous development achievement, Wagoner said Invesco and the US business community were delighted to see the substantial progress made at the US-China economic and trade talks, and pledged to continue exploring the Chinese market and contribute to US-China economic and trade cooperation.
