China set to lead global nuclear power capacity by 2030

China's nuclear power industry is on track to become the global leader in operational nuclear power capacity by 2030, according to a report released by the China Nuclear Energy Association (CNEA) on Sunday.

According to the China Nuclear Energy Development Report 2025 released during the 2025 Spring Summit of International Forum on Nuclear Energy Sustainable Development in Beijing, China currently has 102 nuclear reactors in operation, under construction, or approved for construction, with a combined installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts.

This marks the first time China's overall nuclear power scale has topped global rankings, the report said.

China currently has 28 nuclear reactors under construction, with a total installed capacity of 33.65 million kilowatts, leading the world for 18 consecutive years. Additionally, the country has 58 operational commercial nuclear reactors, with a combined installed capacity of 60.96 million kilowatts, it said.

"China's nuclear energy development is entering a new strategic opportunity period," said Yang Changli, the rotating chairman of the CNEA, during the forum.

"By 2030, the installed capacity of operational nuclear power is expected to reach 110 million kilowatts. Nuclear power will play a vital role as a key substitute for high-carbon energy sources and a mainstay for the stability of the new power system."
