What lies beneath Google's naming game

Google Maps is stirring controversy in the South China Sea. The platform now shows the label "West Philippine Sea", where it previously showed only "South China Sea".

This isn't the first time Google Maps has stirred controversy — remember when it renamed the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America" for US users?

Here's another interesting fact: a report found that "West Philippine Sea" is mostly promoted on social media by accounts linked to the US.

However, changing labels doesn't change history.
