Court indicts former president Bolsonaro

Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday formally indicted former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his allies over an alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. The justices voted unanimously to move forward with criminal charges, which include an attempted coup, conspiracy and sabotage of democratic institutions. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the case, said prosecutors presented sufficient evidence that Bolsonaro led efforts to discredit the election, drafted plans to nullify the vote and sought to block the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. With the indictment approved, the case now moves into the trial phase.

Wildfires double in size, 27 reported dead

Wildfires raging in South Korea doubled in size on Thursday from a day earlier. Authorities called the blazes the country's worst natural fire disaster with at least 27 people killed and historic temples incinerated. More than 33,000 hectares have been charred or were still burning in the largest of the fires that began in central Uiseong county, making it the biggest single forest fire in South Korea's history. The military has released stocks of aviation fuel to help keep firefighting helicopters flying. More than 120 helicopters have been deployed in three regions battling the wildfires, the safety ministry said.
