KHARTOUM - Sudan on Thursday called on the African Union (AU) to end the suspension of the country's membership, according to a statement from Sudan's Foreign Ministry.

"Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Yousif Ahmed sent a written letter to the foreign ministers of the member states in the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC)," ahead of the council's meeting scheduled for Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the statement said.

The Sudanese minister urged the AUPSC to reassess the AU's evaluation of the situation in Sudan, stressing the need for Sudan to return to its "rightful place" within the continental organization and resume its role in African affairs.

The AU suspended Sudan's membership on Oct 27, 2021, two days after Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council and commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, declared a state of emergency and dissolved the ruling council.
