BEIJING - A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman on Friday said that one year ago, China and Nauru had decided to reestablish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level on the basis of the one-China principle. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations, China-Nauru relations have shown robust momentum with fruitful results.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked to comment on the development of China-Nauru relations, as Friday marks the one-year anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

"The exchanges between China and Nauru at all levels have become increasingly close," Mao said. She noted that Nauruan President David Adeang had paid a successful state visit to China in March 2024.

Also, last September, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had met with Nauruan Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Lionel Aingimea on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, said Mao, adding that in December 2024, Speaker of the Nauru Parliament Marcus Stephen had led a delegation on a visit to China.

"Within a year, all the cabinet ministers of Nauru have visited China," she said.

In addition, Mao noted that pragmatic cooperation between the two sides is in full swing in various fields.

She mentioned that the Chinese side supports Nauru in purchasing cargo ships to ensure the supply of materials to Nauru, and that new energy buses produced by Chinese enterprises have helped Nauru achieve its energy-saving and emission-reduction goals.

The medical team of China's Brightness Action program has delivered assistance to cataract patients in Nauru, Mao said, while adding that people from all walks of life and students from Nauru have come to China for both study and training purposes.

"An increasing number of Nauruan citizens are experiencing the benefits of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nauru," said Mao.

The rapid development of China-Nauru relations clearly demonstrates that establishing and developing ties with China on the basis of the one-China principle is where global opinion trends and the arc of history bends -- serving the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples, she stated.

Mao said China is willing to work with Nauru to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, further consolidate political mutual trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation, and continuously achieve new developments in bilateral relations, benefiting the two peoples.

"We also believe that an increasing number of countries will make the right decisions in line with the trends of the times," Mao concluded.
