5 killed in small plane crash in California, US
LOS ANGELES -- Five people were killed Tuesday night after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern California, authorities said on Wednesday.
A sheriff station received an emergency notification at about 8:08 pm local time (0308 GMT Wednesday) from a cellular device that said the user's cellphone had been involved in a collision, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
The rescue team members then located the wreckage of a twin-engine aircraft at about 1.6 kilometers west of Catalina Island Airport.
The five victims, all adults, were pronounced dead at the scene, and an investigation has been conducted, the news release said.
Located at about 35 kilometers south-southwest of Los Angeles, Catalina Island features a diverse and rugged landscape.
