Higher education consultancy ShanghaiRanking released the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities. A total of 203 universities from the Chinese mainland entered the list, published on Wednesday, of the top 1,000 global universities, with 13 ranking in the top 100.

Since 2003, the ARWU has been annually compiling the world's top universities based on its set of methodology and third-party data. This year marks its 22nd edition, which evaluated more than 2,500 institutions and published the best 1,000.

Harvard University tops the ranking list for the 22nd consecutive year, followed this year by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The rest of the top 10 are the University of Cambridge (4th), University of California, Berkeley (5th), University of Oxford (6th), Princeton University (7th), the California Institute of Technology (8th), Columbia University (8th), and University of Chicago (10th).

Chinese mainland universities, with 203 ranked in the top 1,000, outnumbers the 183 universities from the United States. Tsinghua University ranks 22nd globally, maintaining its leading position in Asia. Other Chinese mainland universities in the top 50 are Peking University (24th), Zhejiang University (27th), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (38th), the University of Science and Technology of China (42nd) and Fudan University (50th).

While the Chinese mainland has 13 institutions listed in the top 100, an increase of three from last year, the United States continues to hold the most spots with 38 in the top 100. Following the US and the Chinese mainland is the United Kingdom with eight entries.

Paris-Saclay University, ranked 12th, is recognized as the top university in continental Europe, while the University of Melbourne, in the 37th place, maintains its leading position in Oceania.
