China tackles rising obesity rates with three-year weight control campaign

China unveiled a comprehensive three-year campaign on Wednesday to address its growing problem of obesity and overweight individuals. The initiative, led by the National Health Commission alongside 15 other government departments, aims to raise public awareness about weight management and promote healthy lifestyles.
Guo Yanhong, head of the National Health Commission's medical emergency response department, highlighted the urgency of the campaign. She emphasized that obesity and overweight rates have become a significant public health concern in China.
The action plan outlines a multi-faceted strategy to combat this issue.
The government will intensify public education efforts on weight management. This will involve promoting healthy eating habits, encouraging physical activity, and dispelling myths about weight control. Medical experts and organizations will play a crucial role in disseminating authoritative information.
The plan encourages the development of smart, wearable devices that can monitor weight and other health metrics. Additionally, it emphasizes the utilization of big data and artificial intelligence technologies to personalize health management strategies.
