Accompanied by melodious traditional Chinese music, young people dressed in traditional attire from different dynasties as well as historical flight attendant uniforms of China Southern Airlines staged an impressive performance at the departure hall in the Terminal 2 of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on April 11.

The airline staff members wearing such traditional attire could be found throughout the airport at check-in counters, transit desks, boarding gates and the cabin of a Shangsi Festival-themed flight from Guangzhou, Guangdong province, to Xi'an, Shaanxi province.

The passengers were enthralled by the cultural gala and vied to take photos with the costumed attendants.

Many travelers at the airport, including those from abroad, couldn't wait to participate in interactive activities on the scene, including touhu. Also known as pitch-pot, the ancient game requires players to throw arrows from a distance into a pot. Some showed a keen interest in Chinese calligraphy, trying their hand at the classical art form.

During the flight, the attendants introduced traditional culture, including ancient fashion, to the passengers, giving them an opportunity to experience traditional Chinese culture up close.

The event — incorporating a show of ancient fashion styles, traditional games, intangible cultural heritage experiences and in-flight interactions — was designed to celebrate Shangsi Festival and is part of the airline's promotional series to popularize traditional Chinese culture.

Shangsi Festival is celebrated on the third day of the third lunar month to ward off evil spirits and natural disasters. It fell on April 11 this year.

In 2018, the Communist Youth League's Central Committee set the third day of the third lunar month as China Huafu Day (Chinese National Costume Day), as an approach to advocating the beauty of traditional Chinese clothes.

With the growing influence of China's excellent ancient culture, traditional clothing has become an important cultural phenomenon among young people in recent years.

As a leading airline in the domestic market by the number of aircraft in operation, air route network and annual passenger traffic, China Southern Airlines is dedicated to meeting the growing demand for better travel experiences and showcasing the unique charm of Chinese culture to the world.

Leveraging its more than 3,000 scheduled flights to more than 40 countries and regions on a daily basis, an overseas social media network with a combined 15 million followers and business offices across five continents, the airline continues to enhance the dissemination of Chinese civilization worldwide.
