As temperatures continue to rise recently, frozen rivers and lakes have begun to melt in Jilin province.

Liu Bailing recently captured images of Chinese mergansers in Manjiang township in Fusong county.

By patiently waiting near the river for two days, he managed to capture various images of Chinese mergansers swimming, playing in the water and foraging.

Listed as a national first-level protected animal and classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list, Chinese mergansers have been dubbed "living fossils".

As the ecological environment has improved in recent years, more Chinese mergansers have come to the Changbai Mountain region every spring.
