Putin wins with 87.28 pct of vote after counting complete: CEC

MOSCOW -- Russia's incumbent President Vladimir Putin has secured a landslide victory in the country's presidential election with over 87 percent of the vote after all ballots were counted, according to the Russian Central Election Commission (CEC) on Monday.

Putin won the election with 87.28 percent of the votes, data from the CEC showed, after all ballots had been counted Monday afternoon.

The Communist Party's candidate Nikolai Kharitonov came in second place with 4.31 percent, while the New People party's representative Vladislav Davankov secured 3.85 percent of the vote. Head of the Liberal Democratic Party Leonid Slutsky ranked fourth with 3.2 percent.

Russia kicked off its three-day presidential election on Friday. Under Russian presidential election regulations, a candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the votes will secure victory.

Ella Pamfilova, head of the CEC, said that the turnout stood at 77.44 percent, a record high in the country's modern history.

World leaders have begun congratulating Putin on his victory in the presidential election on Monday.
