Badminton Asia Championships 2024 to kick off in Ningbo

A press conference was held in Ningbo, Zhejiang province on Feb 22 to announce Ningbo as a host of the Badminton Asia Championships 2024, which are scheduled to commence on April 9.

The Badminton Asia Championships, a top-tier badminton event in Asia, are recognized as a BWF (Badminton World Federation) Super 1000 event where badminton players can earn important world ranking points. The tournament will be held in Ningbo and will serve as the final qualifying event for Asian badminton players vying for spots in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Taking place from April 9 to 14 at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center, the tournament will include competitions in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles, with around 320 athletes from 28 countries and regions set to participate.

At the press conference, Wang Chang, a badminton world champion from Ningbo, was appointed as the race ambassador. The tournament's slogan "Meet in Ningbo, Play in Ningbo", logo and mascot were also unveiled.

The logo features two badminton shuttlecocks forming a shape which resembles both the letter "N" for "Ningbo" and ocean waves, a symbol of its status as a coastal city. Each shuttlecock resembles both the Chinese character "人" (people), signifying that the tournament showcases the strength of each person, as well as the letter "V" for "victory", signifying that Asian countries and regions are connected together to achieve a common victory.

The mascot, named "Bobo", features elements including a smiling athlete, Ningbo's traditional delicacy tangyuan, and ocean waves.

The tournament schedule and ticketing information were also announced at the press conference: April 9 for qualification matches, April 10 to 11 for preliminary rounds, April 12 for quarter-finals, April 13 for semi-finals, and April 14 for the finals. Ticket prices range from 80 yuan ($11) to 1,980 yuan.
