Crackdown targets drunk holiday drivers
China's Ministry of Public Security has urged public security organs nationwide to show zero tolerance for drunk driving during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. A nationwide crackdown on the crime has been planned for the holiday period, as well as the periods immediately before and after the holiday, according to a circular issued by the ministry on Tuesday. Traffic control departments of public security organs will intensify law enforcement and inspections at night and in rural areas by deploying more police officers, the circular said. The Spring Festival holiday is seen as a high-risk period for driving under the influence of alcohol, as gatherings of families and friends increase at this time.
Vulnerable groups get help from procurators
A total of 69,000 civil lawsuits were filed with support from Chinese procuratorates nationwide from January to November last year, up 16.5 percent year-on-year, a senior procurator said on Tuesday. Of the lawsuits, over 40,000 were initiated by migrant workers, said Feng Xiaoguang, a senior procurator with the Supreme People's Procuratorate. Procuratorate organs support migrant workers, the elderly, the disabled, women and other vulnerable groups whose rights and interests have been violated. In recent years, lawsuits supported by procuratorial organs across the country have continued to increase, Feng said.
Man who stabbed colleague executed
Zhang Keping, who fatally stabbed a colleague while drunk in 2022, was executed on Sunday after China's top court approved his death sentence. The execution was carried out by the Haidong Intermediate People's Court in Qinghai province, where Zhang was convicted of intentional homicide and reckless driving and received the death penalty. The Haidong court said Zhang and the victim, surnamed Yang, worked for the same company, and Yang was Zhang's superior. In September 2021, when Zhang's job was switched by his employer, Zhang became discontented with Yang, believing he was responsible for the change and that it would affect his work performance. The court said in a statement on Monday that it allowed Zhang to meet family members before his execution, which was supervised by Haidong prosecutors.
