Year-end bonuses for white-collars see a decrease in 2023

Employers' move of controlling the cost has caused a reduction of year-end bonuses to white-collar workers in 2023, and the population of white-collars being promised with an annual bonus also saw a decrease, according to a recent report by the recruitment portal Zhaopin.
The report said that, among the surveyed white-collar workers, 20.2 percent said they will receive a year-end bonus of 2023 for sure, falling by 6.7 percentage points from the previous year. About 39.4 percent of the surveyed white-collars were not sure about getting a bonus, while 13.8 percent said they won't receive a bonus.
The average number of year-end bonuses saw a decrease in 2023 due to economic uncertainties and employers' move of cutting operation costs, Zhaopin said.
According to the report, the average number of bonuses for surveyed white-collars was 6,950 yuan ($967.82) in 2023, falling by 1,478 yuan from the previous year.
White-collars in Beijing gained the highest year-end bonus, reaching about 10,298 yuan on average, and is closely followed by Shanghai, as well Shenzhen in the southern province of Guangdong, with the bonus being 10,070 yuan and 9,971 yuan respectively in these two cities.
Also, the bonus for male white-collars surveyed still outnumbered that for females, said the report, but the gap was narrowed in 2023. According to the report, the male white-collars received 7,493 yuan for their year-end bonus in 2023, and the amount for females was 6,476 yuan.
