Nearly 2,000 people set record for simultaneous top-spinning

In an extraordinary event, 1,946 participants smashed a Guinness World Record on Saturday by simultaneously whipping tops in a massive ice arena in Jingyu county of Baishan city in Northeast China's Jilin province.
The participants gathered at the Songhua River Eco-tourism Scenic Area to set the record. The cracking whips and sea of uniformed people in the arena made for an epic scene.
According to Wu Xiaohong, a Guinness World Records certification officer, participants must use standard whipping tops and keep spinning the tops simultaneously for at least 5 minutes.
"Through the unity and cooperation of the participants and their unremitting efforts, they successfully broke the original record of 1,000 people," she said.
Top-spinning is a common hobby in China and is estimated to have been part of the culture for 4,000 years.
