Bridge sees record crossings over holiday

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge highway port recorded more than 500,000 passenger visits and over 90,000 vehicle crossings during the mid-autumn and National Day holidays running from Sept 29 to 4:30 pm Friday. Both figures reached a record high, seeing an increase of 140 percent and 300 percent respectively when compared to the same period in 2019, according to a statement released by the Zhuhai city government on Monday. On Oct 2 alone, a record of more than 14,000 vehicles exited and entered the mainland via the bridge, a record high in a single day, the statement said.

Fudan University releases HBV study

A joint study by Shanghai's Fudan University and the World Health Organization has found that the strategy of universal vaccination for neonatal hepatitis B has effectively reduced the rate of chronic hepatitis B virus infections in children in China. The study, which examined the prevalence of the infection in the country between 1973 and 2021, involved analyzing more than 3,700 research reports and the chronic hepatitis B infection status of 230 million people in 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as in Hong Kong and Taiwan. A paper about the study led by Chen Xingdong from the Human Phenome Institute of Fudan University was published on the website of the journal Gut on Oct 5.

One dead after hammer attack in Hubei province

A man has been left dead after being assaulted with a hammer on Hangzhou West Road in Huangshi's Xialu district, Hubei province at around 6 pm on Sunday, according to an announcement from the district government on Monday afternoon. A suspect was arrested at the scene. The victim died despite attempted rescue. Investigations are ongoing, the announcement added.

Search underway for renowned cave diver

Renowned diver Han Ting has gone missing while diving in a cave in Jiudun village, Du'an, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in southern China. Han was seen diving in the cave on Saturday evening but failed to reappear. As of Monday afternoon, the cave area had been closed off and search and rescue operations were ongoing. In April, Han broke his own record for the deepest cave dive in Asia, improving from 234 meters to 277.4 meters at the Jiudun cave, only 9 meters shy of the world record. He is also a technical diving instructor for famous actor Wu Jing.
