China called on the European Union to follow the principles of equity, fairness and transparency; comply with World Trade Organization rules and minimize negative impacts on global trade when implementing policies related to its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, said Ministry of Commerce.

Since the introduction of CBAM, various WTO members have raised concerns about the mechanism, and China has always had a consistent stance that relevant policies adopted by EU should keep to the basic principles and rules of the WTO and steer clear of protectionist measures and green trade barriers, He Yadong, spokesman of the ministry, told a news conference.

Within the framework of the WTO, China is actively engaging with all parties to promote multilateral discussions on green trade policies, He said.

Climate change is a shared challenge for all humanity and a crucial area of global governance. Countries should adhere to multilateralism and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, working together through broader global cooperation to address climate change, He added.
