93 people arrested for online gambling
Police in Southwest China's Yunnan province have arrested 93 people suspected of involvement in an online gambling ring, the public security bureau of Zhaotong city announced on Sunday. Police said that more than 900 million yuan ($125 million) was involved in the case. A total of seven online gambling apps were shut down. In 2021, police in Zhaotong found that an individual surnamed Wang, along with others, had organized gambling activities on internet platforms with huge capital flows. After 16 months of investigation, the police raided nine gang premises inside or outside of the province, seizing some 80 mobile phones and 27 computers.
Yellow alert issued for geological disasters
Chinese authorities on Monday issued a yellow alert for possible geological disasters triggered by rain in parts of Henan, Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Shaanxi. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the China Meteorological Administration warned of risks of rain-triggered geological disasters in those regions from 8 pm Monday to 8 pm on Tuesday. China will face multiple natural disasters in July, including floods, severe convective weather, typhoons and high temperatures, authorities warned.
Media issue social responsibility reports
Over 500 media organizations, ranging from central news agencies to county-level media centers, have collectively issued their social responsibility reports for last year. Additionally, several provinces, including Heilongjiang, Shaanxi and Hunan, expanded coverage to include media outlets at the provincial, prefectural and county levels. The news agencies reported from the aspects such as the political, service, humanistic care, cultural and moral responsibilities.
Tibet political adviser under investigation
Jiang Jie, vice-chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has been placed under investigation for suspected severe violations of Party discipline and laws, an official statement said on Monday. Jiang is being investigated by the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision, according to the statement.
