Heilongjiang has a long history of sports exchanges and cooperation with Russia, especially in winter sports, such as figure skating, ice hockey, curling, cross-country skiing and speed skating.

It was the fifth time athletes from the two countries have competed on the frozen river since the first friendly ice hockey game was held in 2017.
