US enters new year with rising mass shootings

Seven people were killed and one injured in a shooting in Half Moon Bay, Northern California, Monday afternoon. Police have arrested a 67-year-old male suspect and are investigating his motive.

On Jan 21, the Lunar New Year's Eve, a deadly shooting occurred in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, Southern California. Huu Can Tran, a 72-year-old suspect, entered a local dance hall and opened fire, killing 11 people, most of whom were Asian.

On Monday evening, local people gathered to hold a vigil in memory of the victims. There have been 39 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
