China, Mongolia media urged to boost ecological and environmental protection

Media outlets of China and Mongolia have been urged to share stories of ecological and environmental protection and the achievements of cooperation between China and Mongolia, a forum has told.

The 13th China-Mongolia media forum was held via video link on Friday. More than 120 representatives of Chinese and Mongolian media organizations attended the forum.

China's Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu said that China has vigorously promoted green and low-carbon development, continued to improve the quality of the ecological environment, and has taken an active part in global environmental governance over the years.

In the past 10 years, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP have dropped by 34.4 percent, and the share of coal in total energy consumption has dropped from 68.5 percent to 56.0 percent. The installed capacity of wind, light, water, and biomass power generation ranked first in the world, and the production and sales of new-energy vehicles ranked first in the world for seven consecutive years.

He said that environmental protection is an important area of cooperation between China and Mongolia. Over the years, China and Mongolia have conducted practical cooperation in policy dialogue, personnel training, and capacity building. It is hoped that the media will give full coverage to the progress of ecological and environmental protection work and the achievements of cooperation between the two countries.

Liu Siyang, vice-president of the All-China Journalists Association, said that China and Mongolia face similar ecological and environmental problems. The media of the two countries need to carry out close exchanges on jointly building a green Silk Road, developing a green economy, and jointly coping with climate change.

The media of the two countries should make full use of their own advantages to inspire and nurture public awareness of environmental protection, and assume important responsibilities such as safeguarding public interests, tracking social hot spots, giving comprehensive and rational expression, and leading social progress, he added.

Chinese and Mongolian media have signed two cooperation agreements online at the forum. Initiated in 2010, the forum has become an important platform for the media of both nations to advance exchanges and cooperation.
