Other than a paradise for traders from all over the world, Yiwu in East China's Zhejiang province is also known for its brown sugar, the production of which dates back four centuries. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014.

Brown sugar production in Yiwu requires nine successive pots which guarantee the purity of the sugar. The sugar is a light yellow color with a little cyan and tastes spongy and sweet. Almost everyone in Yiwu has fond memories of the brown sugar.
